Steve Halpert has taught at MECA for over 40 years. He earned his BA from Brown University and his MA from Harvard University. He has also taught at Deering High School, the University of New England, and the University of Southern Maine. From 1980 to 2009, he was the owner and operator of The Movies, a popular independent cinema formerly located in The Old Port section of Portland. He has also worked as a reporter and as a gallery curator.

Extracurricular

The Movies on Exchange, which Steve ran and operated, featured alternative, independent, foreign, documentary and classic films for 32 years.  The final movie they showed, in January, 2009, was Casablanca, the same film they opened with in 1976.  He continues to curate films for the Portland Museum of Art’s  PMA Movies series.
