Sound Design

In this hands-on workshop, students will dive into audio editing techniques used in sound design. This course will cover the fundamentals of why, when, and how to sound design and use music and other elements in radio and podcasting. Students will learn where to find sounds and how to record their own for sound design. Students will be introduced to array of digital processing tools built into DAWs, including EQ, reverb, compression, as well as other dynamic, filter, and delay effects. At the end of days, students will have 1-2 audio pieces with rich, cinematic sound design, and a fuller understanding of how and why to manipulate sound to augment a radio story. Sign up.

The Personal Essay

In this week-long intensive class, we’ll dive into the art of the personal essay. By the end of the class, you will have crafted a new personal essay of 3,000-4,000 words. Building toward this final essay, we’ll develop a range of essential skills: distinguishing the various ‘selves’ inhabiting our essay; crafting vivid, sense-rich scenes of experience; identifying guiding questions; and writing honest personal reflections that will surprise you and the reader. In class we will undertake a range of writing exercises, analyze exceptional essays, and workshop exercises and essay drafts. We will also cover other formal and ethical concerns involved in writing about our lives, and explore steps we can take to expand the scope of our writing project from a single essay to a book-length memoir. Sign up.

Documentary Film

This five-day intensive aims to equip students with the skills necessary to shoot and produce powerful, short-form documentaries through compelling video and audio. Students will engage in hands-on training in DSLR video, audio, and editing with Premiere. Coursework will be geared toward the beginner to intermediate student and will focus primarily on shooting and production, including interviewing, external sound recording, b-roll, basic lighting and editing. Students will be provided with story ideas in and around Portland, as they will dive headfirst into shooting stories and critiquing colleagues’ work. Students will also have access to computer labs and video editing software (Premiere) during and after class hours. Sign up.
