About the Event

Dr. Shalini Le Gall and Dr. Sayantan Mukhopadhyay discuss the research practices behind current and upcoming exhibitions at the PMA.

  • Dr. Shalini Le Gall is the Chief Curator and Susan Donnell and Harry W. Konkel Curator of European Art at the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. She has co-curated the exhibitions River Works: Whistler and the Industrial Thames (2019), Inside Out: The Prints of Mary Cassatt (2020), both at the Colby College Museum of Art (Waterville, Maine) and Surrealist Play (PMA, 2022), Elizabeth Colomba: Mythologies (PMA, 2023), and Alex Katz: Wedding Dress (PMA, 2023-2024). Le Gall has also written on British and French painting and photography, museum studies and museum education, and is co-editor of a special issue of British Art Studies entitled Thames River Works. Prior to coming to Portland, Le Gall was the Linde Family Foundation Curator of Academic Programs at the Colby College Museum of Art (2014–2019), and Adjunct Instructor of Art History at NYU-Paris (2009–2014). She received her B.A. from Georgetown University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Art History from Northwestern University.
  • Dr. Sayantan Mukhopadhyay is the assistant curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Portland Museum of Art. His research interests include the arts of South Asia, queer aesthetics, the politics of friendship, and expressions of home and belonging. Prior to his curatorial career, Sayantan worked in education, publishing, and the visual arts in New York, Los Angeles, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Shanghai. He holds a PhD in Art History from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a BA in Art History and Comparative Literature from Williams College.
