Textile + Fashion Design
>> Indigo + Shaped Resist
Students will learn simple but dramatic shibori techniques and dye their own work using an organic indigo vat in the textiles studio. We will additionally learn about the history of indigo dye and tour the textiles facilities where students at MECA are growing indigo and other natural dye plants for use next school year. Work alongside students from Textile and Fashion Design at MECA while connecting to our ancestors through the use of a historic, natural dye plant that has impacted both textiles and fashion throughout human history.
>> Skin & Bones
Working with the everyday materials, bamboo skewers and masking tape, you will create a dynamic sculptural form that you will cherish forever.
Woodworking + Furniture Design
>> Carving a Wooden Spoon
Students will carve a wooden spoon by hand with a variety of tooling including spoke shaves, hand planes, and gouges. We will utilize techniques for shaping and removing wood to refine a final form.
Animation + Game Design
>> Animation: The Key Secrets
This workshop is full!
In this workshop we will explore a few of the 12 principles of animation. You will create a short rough animation of a simple “flour sack” character in Adobe Animate and export your results as a shareable GIF.
>> Clay on the Wheel
Have you ever seen someone throwing a pot on the wheel and thought it would be fun to try? Now’s your opportunity! Come on up to the Ceramics Department where the basics of making a pot will be demonstrated — all participants will have the opportunity to sit at the wheels and have assistance learning to throw. Those with experience are also welcomed.
>> Go Figure!
This workshop is full! Observational drawing is at the core of MECA’s Foundation Program. It is less about making finished works of art and more about learning to truly and deeply see. “Go Figure!” is a drawing workshop designed to familiarize and introduce participants to observational drawing techniques. We will be working from a live model, collaboratively and at a large scale. Come with an open mind and be willing to get messy. (We’ll provide aprons and you can wash up afterward.)
