Congratulations on your acceptance to Maine College of Art! Join us for an Admitted Student Day at MECA

You are cordially invited to attend one of MECA’s Admitted Student Days this spring — we’d like to warmly welcome you to campus as a new member of MECA’s artist community. Our Admitted Student Days will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2019 and on Saturday, April 13, 2019.

Doors will open right at 10am and we’ll get started around 10:45 with workshops and a parent information session, followed by lunch, meetings with Financial Aid and Student Life, student sessions, optional tours, and much more. The day will wrap up around 3pm.

Please RSVP below to reserve a spot for you and your family — you’ll choose the date you would like to attend as well as which workshop you’d like to take as a prospective student at MECA (BFA admitted students only)! We encourage early registrations as spots for the Admitted Student Days — and their featured workshops — will fill up quickly.

Admitted Student Day Workshops: Saturday, March 30

Textile + Fashion Design
>> Indigo + Shaped Resist

Students will learn simple but dramatic shibori techniques and dye their own work using an organic indigo vat in the textiles studio. We will additionally learn about the history of indigo dye and tour the textiles facilities where students at MECA are growing indigo and other natural dye plants for use next school year. Work alongside students from Textile and Fashion Design at MECA while connecting to our ancestors through the use of a historic, natural dye plant that has impacted both textiles and fashion throughout human history.

>> Skin & Bones

Working with the everyday materials, bamboo skewers and masking tape, you will create a dynamic sculptural form that you will cherish forever.

Woodworking + Furniture Design
>> Carving a Wooden Spoon

Students will carve a wooden spoon by hand with a variety of tooling including spoke shaves, hand planes, and gouges. We will utilize techniques for shaping and removing wood to refine a final form.


Animation + Game Design
>> Animation: The Key Secrets
This workshop is full!
In this workshop we will explore a few of the 12 principles of animation. You will create a short rough animation of a simple “flour sack” character in Adobe Animate and export your results as a shareable GIF.

>> Clay on the Wheel

Have you ever seen someone throwing a pot on the wheel and thought it would be fun to try? Now’s your opportunity! Come on up to the Ceramics Department where the basics of making a pot will be demonstrated — all participants will have the opportunity to sit at the wheels and have assistance learning to throw. Those with experience are also welcomed.

>> Go Figure!
This workshop is full! Observational drawing is at the core of MECA’s Foundation Program. It is less about making finished works of art and more about learning to truly and deeply see. “Go Figure!” is a drawing workshop designed to familiarize and introduce participants to observational drawing techniques. We will be working from a live model, collaboratively and at a large scale. Come with an open mind and be willing to get messy. (We’ll provide aprons and you can wash up afterward.)

Metalsmithing + Jewelry
>> Forge a Copper Bracelet

Forge (hammer) a piece of copper rod into a bracelet from start to finish. Take home a bracelet of your own making!

>> Direct Positive Portrait

This workshop is full!
In this workshop students will utilize an 8×10 view camera to create “one of a kind” film-less self-portraits in the studio using our strobe systems. Once exposed in our lower level lab they will process the gelatin silver print in our darkrooms on the fourth floor.

>> Manifest & Multiply a Menagerie through Messing with Materials
This workshop is full!

In this workshop, we will play and invent with versatile materials (inks, paper, brushes) combining automatic mark-making layered with prompts and invented elements as a means of generating your own cast of creatures! Our context in this workshop is a repeat and tiled pattern. Students will have the opportunity to print copies to see how their patterns works!


Graphic Design
>> RISO Zine Workshop

This workshop is full!
We will design and produce small zines with a Risograph printer. Students will create their own content/narrative by hand, collage, drawing, and color overlays to create two-color printed zines.

>> Foley and SFX Workshop: Bringing Film to Life With Sound

Students will add live sounds and other sound effects to a short video or animation. Experience what happens when a silent film comes to life with sound.

Printmaking >> Print and Stitch
Students will print and bind their own pamphlet-style sketchbook, becoming familiar with several printmaking processes and a fundamental binding technique in the process.
