Exhibition Reception: Friday, July 14, 5-7pm

Symposium: September 11 - 13, 2023

From stone to wood, metal to synthetics, and soap to sand; carving today involves a certain type of spatial thinking and understanding of materiality in our digital and haptic age. This Is Out of Hand is an expansive exhibition and symposium that will bring together 33 artists from around the world through a common thread of carving. Within their art and research process, all of these artists understand the variety and complexities of the carving process.

The exhibit will include artists working in what we understand as traditional materials, as well as artists who have used carved historical objects in their work, and artists who use digital technology such as physical computing and video; challenging the systems around these reductive processes.

Artists include: Allora & Calzadilla, Gary Ambrose, Mari Beltran, Stan Bevan, Lewis Colburn, Raul De Lara, Sam Finkelstein, Ben Gancsos, John Gardiner, Mark Herrington, Duncan Hewitt, Kodai Hihara, Kazumi Hoshino, Andreas von Huene, Isabel Kelley (BFA ‘13), Kieran Kinsella, Lin Lisberger, Napoles Marty, Vik Muniz & Marcelo Coelho, David Nash, Catalina Ouyang, Ken Payne, Kyle Patanaude, Sharon Portelance (BFA ‘82), Torin Porter, Aidia Rayne (BFA ‘22) (with Sam Seda, Patrick Corrigan, David Yearwood), Jean Claude Saintilius, Jesse Salisbury, The Schoodic Sculpture Symposium, Anoushe Shojae-Chaghoravand (BFA ‘19), Gina Siepel (MFA ‘08), Chris Vorhees, Elizabeth Weber
