Commencement 2012

Maine College of Art will hold Commencement at the State Theatre at 10am Saturday, May 12. The commencement speaker is Helen Molesworth, the chief curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. The ceremony marks the graduation of students in the Bachelor of Fine Art program, the Master of Fine Arts in Studio Arts program, and the Post-Baccalaureate in Art Education program. Seating is open and tickets are not required.

Arts Journal Highlights MECA Students, Alumni, and Faculty

Words & Images, a journal produced by The University of Southern Maine, was designed by Maine College of Art student Adriana Warner '12. In addition to original writing, the annual arts journal features the work of MECA alums Beatrice Abbott '11 and Nicole Duennebier '05, students Robert Bennett  '14, Ray Ewing '12, John Huckins '12, Devon Johnson '13, Tina McLuckie '12, Abby Mechanic '13, Hannah Rosengren '13, and  Gabriella Sturchio '12,  as well as faculty member Gail Spaien.

There will be a book release on April 19 from 7pm-9pm at Mayo Street Arts.

Each year, Maine College of Art holds the Merit Competition for students who will be majoring in the 2012-2013 academic year. Winners are awarded scholarship prizes.

Edward M. and Carole J. Friedman
Two Awards of $1,200 each
Established in 2002, the Edward M. and Carole J. Friedman Merit Scholarship are given to outstanding artists through the annual Merit Competition. Ed, an alumnus of Maine College of Art, and Carole are pleased to be able to recognize a student each year that makes us all proud to be part of this College.

Beatrice Bouton Barrett Endowed Memorial Scholarship
4 awards of $2,400 each
The Beatrice Bouton Barrett Endowed Memorial Scholarship awards were established 1988 to assist deserving students who are seeking an education in art at the Maine College of Art.Mrs. Barrett lived in Georgetown, Maine.  She was an art teacher and active watercolorist throughout her life – until her death at age 83.  She often spoke of how hard it was for art students to stay in school and how pleased she was that there was a first-rate art college in Maine.  She was a 1926 graduate of the Maryland Institute for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts and Costume Design.

Visiting Artist Lecture: Robin Mandel
April 12, 10:30am, Sculpture Department

Robin Mandel is an artist working in sculpture, installation, and photography. His works use motion, light, and shadow to tread the line between material and immaterial. He has received grants from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and the St. Botolph Club Foundation in Boston, and residencies at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA. His teaching credits include the Rhode Island School of Design, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where he was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art in 2007-2008.

“Can you really teach entrepreneurship?”

Stephen Schiffman is Visiting Faculty of Creative Entrepreneurship at Maine College of Art for the 2011-12 Academic Year. He is on sabbatical from the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, where he most recently served as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty at Olin. Prior to that, from 1986 to 2002, Steve was a faculty member at Babson College, where he also served as Dean of the Undergraduate Program there from 1994-2002.

Faculty Lecture: Adam Manley
April 26, 12:30 in Osher Hall 

Adam Manley received his BA in International Relations and Political Science from The State University of New York at New Paltz, and his MFA in Furniture Design and Woodworking from San Diego State University. He currently teaches in the Woodworking & Furniture Design program at MECA.
