Encaustic: Painting & Sculpture - CPT 172
add to selected courses

Encaustic, meaning to burn in in Greek, dates back to the 5th century BC. Once an obsolete technique, encaustic has emerged in the last two decades as a medium that is prized for its beauty and versatility. In contemporary practice it is a method of painting with a beeswax-based paint kept molten on a heated palette. In this intensive workshop, participants will learn to prepare supports, mix colors, apply wax, fuse, etch, layer, and incorporate found objects. In addition to painting, encaustic can be used to model and to create a durable and textured surface on sculptural work. Bring to the first class: a heat gun and an electric skillet with a temperature dial (both can be shared between two people). A list of supplies will be emailed to registered students, who can purchase materials and equipment at a discount from R & F Handmade Paints. Kim Bernard uses encaustic in both flat and sculptural work, and she exhibits her work nationally. Her recent 2-D encaustic works are abstract paintings that utilize a minimal color palette and repetitive imagery, thick layers of translucent and opaque wax, paper prepared with batik markings and hand rubbed oil stick combined to create multi dimensional panels. Bernard is represented by Arden Gallery in Boston and teaches regionally as a visiting artist. She is the founding member of New England Wax, a professional association of artists working with encaustic. She holds a BFA from Parsons School of Design. www.kbernard.com
