To apply for the program students must have a BFA or BA degree, which included a minimum of 30 credits in studio art and 12 credits in art history. Credits hours are reviewed on an individual basis. An overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.8 and a GPA of 3.0 in art courses are required for admittance into the program. Additionally, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in the Art Education courses to graduate from the program.†
The state mandates a student participate in a minimum of 15 weeks of student teaching. In the 10 month program students teach in 3 distinct garde levels: 7 weeks in the high school, 7 weeks in the middle school and 7 weeks in the elementary school.
Upon completion of this program and passing the Praxis exams, students will be eligible for a K-12 Art Teaching Certificate in Maine, with reciprocity in all other states.
