Get Certified in Maine. Teach Anywhere.
Pass your enthusiasm for creative endeavor on to the next generation by earning a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Art Education.
Maine College of Art offers an intensive, one-year program that reflects the most progressive approaches in the field related to teaching art.
Put your artistic skills and insights to work in the classrooms of southern Maine while mastering theoretical and methodological concepts in peer seminars.
A certificate in art education will allow you to pursue a career that complements your studio practice while contributing to the development of open-minded, vibrant young citizens. The Post Baccalaureate Art Education Program at MECA is an accredited, state-approved, full time, ten-month program, which blends the worlds of artist and educator.

Simon Adams, Art Ed '09, was appointed to the Education Committee of the Maine Arts Commission.

Students will gain an in-depth, comprehensive understanding of how artistic and educational skills intersect through the exploration of theories of artistic development and engagement in educational practices in a cooperative learning environment, and in residency in the Institute of Contemporary Art, Portland’s public and private schools, and community-based organizations. Students who have obtained a BFA or BA degree from an accredited institution, including 30 studio art credits and 12 art history credits, may apply. Upon successfully completing the program and passing the Praxis exams, students will be eligible to be certified art educators in Maine and all other states.
Here at MECA we respect and value educators; we offer you the opportunity to work collaboratively with artists, community leaders, museum and art educators to develop a uniquely personal philosophy and practice of teaching, one in which you will be involved in service learning, community art and teaching in public, private and alternative schools.
Applications submitted before March 1 will receive priority consideration for admission and scholarships. Applications received after March 1 will be considered on a rolling basis, space permitting.
