AE 501 Art Education Methods Intensive (3 credits)
Students will explore the diverse roles of the artist/educator. Students will critically examine theories and practices in the teaching of art to children and adolescents through readings, cooperative learning strategies, interviewing, on-site observations, presentations and research. In addition to class time, a minimum of 10 hours of assigned fieldwork is required for successful completion of this course.

AE 503 Contemporary Methods in Art Education (2 credits)
Students will study and critically examine theories of contemporary methods of art education such as Reggio Emilia, Discipline Based Art Education(DBAE), and Teaching for Artistic Behaviors (TAB) and practice using these theories in the classroom. Students will learn to write lesson plans that incorporate relevant theory, produce documentation, and assess learning outcomes. In addition to class time, a minimum of 25 hours of assigned fieldwork is required for successful completion of this course.

AE 506 Exceptionality in the Art Classroom (3 credits)
In this course, students will develop an understanding of the legal, ethical, social and educational issues that affect how schools meet the needs of exceptional students. Students will learn the characteristics of exceptional learners, and how to effectively instruct and provide educational services and resources for mild to moderately handicapped, and gifted children particularly in an inclusive art classroom. Students with gain a basic understanding of the processes and procedures that determine student eligibility for special services. In addition to class time, a minimum of 15 hours of assigned fieldwork is required for successful completion of this course.

AE 507 Educational Perspectives on Learning (3 credits)
Students will study multiple perspectives of educational theory and their relationship to the cognitive, creative and psychosocial development of children and adolescents. Students will also examine current educational practices in teaching to multiple intelligences and multicultural populations.

AE 511 Elementary Art Curriculum and Assessment (2 credits)
This course is designed to prepare students for student teaching. Under the guidance of the instructor, students will explore materials, develop comprehensive lesson plans, and assessments tools, and through guided practice, gain confidence in teaching children. In addition to class time, a minimum of 25 hours of pre-practicum experiences is required for successful completion of this course.


AE 512 Secondary Art Curriculum Development and Assessment (2 credits)
This course is designed to prepare students for student teaching. Under the guidance of the instructor, students will explore materials, develop comprehensive lesson plans, and assessments tools, and through guided practice, gain confidence in teaching adolescents. In addition to class time, a minimum of 25 hours of pre-practicum experiences is required for successful completion of this course.

AE 525 Bringing Museum and Contemporary Art Collections to the Classroom (3 credits)
In this course, students will use the museum and contemporary art collections as a resource for informing classroom practice. Using shows at the ICA, SPACE, and the Portland Museum of Art, and under the guidance of the instructor and educators at these institutions, students will collaborate with local schools and teachers to conduct classroom visits, develop and lead gallery tours, and teach integrated workshops as part of the ICA's Adventures in Art Program. Students will engage audiences of young children by extending and integrating their academic knowledge with hands-on museum experiences. In addition to class time, a minimum of 25 hours of assigned fieldwork is required for successful completion of this course.

AE 531 & AE 532 High School Student Teaching Internship/Professional Practices Seminar (4 credits)
Students will be placed in a high school art classroom of a local school and work under the supervision of a faculty member and a cooperating teacher. The seminar will provide a forum to support students when they are teaching in the schools. Issues relevant to student teaching experiences will be investigated through readings, discussions and role-playing.

AE 533 & AE 534 Middle School Student Teaching Internship/Professional Practices Seminar (4 credits)
Students will be placed in a middle school art classroom of a local school and work under the supervision of a faculty member and a cooperating teacher. The seminar will provide a forum to support students when they are teaching in the schools. Issues relevant to student teaching experiences will be investigated through readings, discussions and role-playing.

AE 535 & AE 536 Elementary Student Teaching Internship/Professional Practices Seminar (4 credits)

Students will be placed in an elementary school art classroom of a local school and work under the supervision of a faculty member and a cooperating teacher. The seminar will provide a forum to support students when they are teaching in the schools. Issues relevant to student teaching experiences will be investigated through readings, discussions and role-playing.

AE 551 Community Based Art Education (3 credits)
Students will learn how to work collaboratively within their communities to create art work that has a social impact. Students will explore, develop, and participate in engaging intergenerational and multicultural community field and group activities on site in various venues in the Portland area. In addition to class time, a minimum of 25 hours of assigned fieldwork is required for successful completion of this course.
