undergraduate admissions : international students

 

To apply for admissions as a full-time or part-time Bachelor of Fine Arts degree student, the following
items must be submitted:

1. A completed and signed application form.

2. A non-refundable $60 U.S. currency application fee. Checks, money orders, and credit cards
are accepted. Please do not send cash.

3. Two letters of recommendation, preferably from two of the following: art teacher, guidance
counselor, current academic teacher, and/or employer.

4. A portfolio of 15-20 pieces of the student’s recent artwork. Ideally, half of these pieces should be done from direct observation of three-dimensional, live situations. When submitting a
portfolio in slide form, slides should be submitted in an 8 1⁄2” x 11” slide sheet. All slides should
be labeled with the applicant’s name, size and medium of the work, and “TOP” to indicate
orientation for viewing. Digital work should be submitted as high quality jpegs, at least 800 x
600 pixels but no larger than 1024 x 768 pixels.

5. Official transcripts from all secondary and post-secondary institutions attended. Transcripts will be considered official if they arrive to MECA in an envelope that is stamped and sealed by the issuing institution. The applicant can deliver transcripts as long as they are in an unopened envelope stamped and sealed by the issuing institution.

6. Demonstration of English proficiency. All applicants whose primary language is not English
must demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English. The following are acceptable ways
to demonstrate English proficiency:

  • A minimum score of 213 on the computer-based version or a 550 on the paper-based
    version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Official score reports
    must be dated within two years of intended start date at MECA.
  • Graduation from a U.S. high school with at least 2 years of high school English, not in
    conjunction with English as a Second Language (ESL) and documentation of a B average
    or higher.
  • Successful completion of 2 consecutive semesters of English Composition taken at a
    regionally accredited U.S. college in conjunction with full-time course load and not in
    conjunction with ESL. A minimum grade of B is required in each semester


7. Declaration of Finances (DOF) form. International applicants must submit to the College a
declaration of finances (DOF) indicating that the applicant has financial resources adequate to
provide for his or her expenses at the College without resorting to unauthorized employment.
You can download the DOF form here. This form must be completed and returned to the
Office of Admissions.

8. Verification of Finances (VOF) from the student’s bank or sponsor’s bank must substantiate the
funding indicated on the DOF. These funds must reflect the sum of tuition, fees, and living
expenses for one year, approximately $40,000. All documents must be in English and in U.S.
dollars, or the bank must supply the current exchange rate. All supporting documentation must
be dated within one year of initial enrollment at Maine College of Art.
