undergraduate program : woodworking & furniture design

“Make it first” could be the motto of the woodworking and furniture design department, where physical learning is valued. First-year majors get the nuts and bolts – literally. They learn how to put things together, the
language of material and technique, respect for form and use. They also learn how to translate visual thinking into verbal concepts, especially after a piece is underway or completed. They get a sense of rhythm and
balance between thinking and doing. All that continues into the second year, along with increased focus on finding and refining a personal voice and translating it into making.
