Stephen
Quirk '00
MECA Photography major Stephen Quirk spent a semester abroad on an independent
study project at Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughan, Ireland. He is
a Technology Assistant at the Maine College of Art and has worked as a
Studio Assistant at Affordable Photo and Tonee Harbert Photography, both
in Portland. His work has been shown at the Lewis Gallery at the Portland
Public Library and Filament Gallery in Portland. About the photos included
in the Alumni/ae Exhibition 2003, which is part of his "One Flesh:
Documenting Sex, Gender and Sexuality" project, Stephen writes, "There
are two sexes, but there are many genders. This was the spark that set
my project in motion. I wanted to hold
a mirror up to people and show that that no matter how one identifies – people
are still people. . . I also wanted to create a new body of work specifically
for the [show]. . . something unlike any of my previous work."
