Stephen F. Mitchell,
III '02
Stephen earned his BFA in Sculpture at MECA in 2002. During his studies he
earned a scholarship and two Writing Across the Curriculum Awards. He has
collaborated with Harold Philbrook on performances at Space Gallery in 2003
and participated in the annual invitational multimedia performance event "In
My Backyard," held in Yarmouth, Maine. He writes, "Identity is
constructed through many experiences loosely and violently pieced together
to form our personal perception of self as a whole. This is then internalized,
hidden deep within a homogenized façade created to fit safely into
social and cultural constructs of proper behavior, thought and appearance.
. . The stuffed dogs in "Five Identical Puppies" are a physical
representation of this idea. . . the dog that has been turned back, revealing
these scars, becomes an outcast within the group."
