Joe Kievitt '93
Joe says his work "concerns the appearance of the natural environment and the absorbing, processing and presenting of this information as an image through the filter of particular artistic, technological and cultural influences. . . my work has evolved out of a need to make art that is clear and direct, and for me, charcoal and graphite on paper is the purest means possible." Joe was born in Belfast, Maine and after earning his BFA in Painting at MECA attended an artist residency program at Vermont Studio Center and earned his MFA in Painting from Parsons School of Design in New York. In 2001 he was awarded the Portland Museum of Art’s prestigious Purchase Prize for his piece in their Biennial show. In 1995 he was awarded a Carina House Fellowship to paint on Monhegan Island. He has had solo shows at the Miller Block Gallery in Boston, the Paul Thiebaud Gallery in San Francisco and the Campbell-Thiebaud Gallery in Laguna Beach, California and has participated in group exhibits at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art and the James Fuentes Gallery in New York.
