Connie Hayes '80
Connie Hayes is represented by Greenhut Galleries in Portland. She graduated from MECA with a BFA in Painting and earned her MFA at Tyler in Philadelphia. She is a former MECA faculty member and in 1992 she served as the College's interim Dean. In 2003, MECA awarded her an honorary doctorate in Fine Arts. She has also done artist residences at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and on Monhegan Island. She has participated in numerous group and solo shows and has been a visiting artist at MECA, the University of Southern Maine, San Francisco State University and Bowdoin College. A book about "Borrowed Views," paintings Connie has made of treasured places selected during 15 years of travel, will be released in June of 2004 in conjunction with her upcoming solo exhibit at the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland. Her work has been collected by L.L. Bean, The "New Yorker" and Habitat for Humanity. She says, about her work, "The color that air feels interests me. . . I want the merely seen to become the felt, so I amplify. . . What many feelings does this day offer, and what can I identify in paint to resonate with these feelings?. . . I want to awaken slumbering sensibilities through arresting colors, colors that catch, snag and attach."
