MFA '00
Catherine studied at Smith College and earned her BFA in Painting from the
Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work has been exhibited at the Center
for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport, the Betty Rymer Gallery at the Art
Institute of Chicago, Thomas Moser Cabinetmakers in New York (a show she
also curated), and Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio, among other
places. She has participated in a variety of artist talks and discussions,
and has been a visiting artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago
and the University of Southern Maine. In 2001, she received a full scholarship
to the Vermont Studio Center, in Johnson, Vermont. About her piece for the
Alumni Exhibition, she writes, "In upholstering these sculptures with
my old velvet skirt and my grandmother’s beaver coat I thought about
the nature of family. My genes, like the chairs, are a structure handed down
through the generations that get reupholstered with each era."
